Feb. 16, 1923: Legendary Blues singer, Bessie Smith, also known as “The Empress of Blues,” records her first recording, “Down Hearted Blues” for Columbia Records on Feb. 16, 1923. The single sold 800,000 copies. “Down Hearted Blues” was posthumously inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2006.
Sidenote: Bessie was one of Billie Holiday’s influences.
